The Journey of Hartington Hills: From Fields to a Flourishing Escape

Hartington Hills, formerly known as Upper Hurst Farm, began as a vision of transformation by Susan Green in 2011. At the time, it was nothing more than an open field without amenities. But with a bold plan and determination, Susan secured planning permission on the auspicious date of 11/11/11. Wasting no time, work commenced immediately, and by Easter 2012, the site welcomed its first visitors—a remarkable turnaround.

Over the years, Susan’s creativity and dedication turned the property into a thriving haven for guests. The cowshed and hayloft were lovingly converted into her personal residence, while the old piggery became a charming holiday cottage. She added a luxurious glamping yurt, a cozy loft conversion above the shower block, and even two stylish caravans for rental. Each addition marked another step in her journey to create a welcoming retreat, and the business flourished.

During the challenging days of the COVID pandemic, Susan’s daughter, Amy, joined the family venture under extraordinary circumstances. Concerned for her mum and the future of the business, Amy stepped in to lend a hand—initially working without pay to keep things afloat. Her passion and drive proved invaluable, and today, Amy has become an integral part of the team, managing marketing and day-to-day operations. Of course, Susan remains a guiding presence, and rest assured, Amy is no longer working for free!

In June 2024, the business faced its greatest challenge yet—a devastating fire that destroyed the barn housing their district biomass heating system and claimed the beloved holiday cottage. It was an unexpected blow, but true to their resilient spirit, Susan and Amy have set their sights on a fresh chapter.

Rebranded as Hartington Hills, the site is set to reopen in May 2025, promising an even brighter future. With a legacy of creativity, determination, and a touch of family magic, Hartington Hills is ready to welcome guests once again—stronger and more vibrant than ever.

Behind this remarkable transformation is not just Sue and Amy’s determination, but a truly exceptional team of hard-working individuals who bring the magic to life every single day. From the tireless site wardens who ensure everything runs smoothly, to the dedicated cleaners, skilled groundsman, and trusted contractors—many of whom have been part of the journey for years—their efforts shine through in the glowing feedback Hartington Hills consistently receives. Together, this close-knit team embodies the heart and soul of Hartington Hills, making it a place guests can’t wait to return to.

"Cracking site close to Hartington and Hulme End. Had a nice stroll down to Beresford Dale while we were there. Big hardstanding level pitch, electric and fast wifi, if you want it! Toilets and showers immaculate. Ready for my next visit! Thank you"

"Hartington Hills is one of our favourite caravan touring sites. The site is in an absolutely stunning location and is close to a huge number of brilliant walks. A lovely short walk across the fields to a decent pub (Manifold Inn), too. Pitches are very well maintained by the brilliant team and the mix of tents and caravans creates a really nice atmosphere, especially in the evenings with the firepits all lit."

Alice

"A beautiful, dog friendly site with lovely, clean facilities. Always hot water. Really nice, level hardstanding serviced pitches with room to park. Shop has amazing meat, as well as those little bits you forgot to pack."

Laura & Colin

"A gorgeous little campsite with AMAZING bathroom and shower facilities. Out of the way but not disconnected from the local area."

Jack

"Location was spot on, the facilities are frankly a real treat, but best of all are the group of folks who run the place - lead by the very helpful Amy. Nothing was too much - they even accommodated us when we wanted to shift out pitch ever so slightly. If you're looking for a quaint little glamping/camping/caravan site close to between Ashbourne and Buxton, this is the spot for you."

Adam

"Lovely site, family friendly and loads of space around the caravan. Staff are lovely. The ponies are very cute! Nice location and there is a pub nearby which is handy if you want to go for food or a drink. Dog friendly too!"
